Pure oud oil:Does thicker mean better quality?
2026-03-17

When getting started with oud oil, many oud oil beginners may consider "thicker is better" or "Pure oud oil must be very thick".

But actually, thickness doesn't always mean high quality. Let’s clear up this myth:

The viscosity of oud oil usually depends on the composition and the production.

Species of Agarwood Trees

The characteristic of the Oud oil depends entirely on the agarwood species; each variety produces a unique aromatic profile.

Pure Oud oil Composition

The core components of agarwood's aroma are sesquiterpenes and their derivatives. These molecules have a relatively large molecular mass, which typically gives the oil a certain texture.

Extraction method of Oud oil

In Broadlink oud, Nature Unveil is a very thick oud oil as well, but it is the oud oil with the lowest price among broadlink's products. It doesn't mean that it is not pure oud oil. It is because Nature Unveil is distilled by CO2 Extraction.

Oud oil made through the CO2 Extraction is usually quite thick in texture.

In oud oil industry, oud oil produced by CO2 Extraction tend to have a lighter fragrance, typically lasting only 3 to 4 hours.  Additionally, this process may carry over minute wood particles, which could potentially cause allergic reactions in some users.

Co2 extraction:  a cutting-edge method used to extract oils and various bioactive compounds from raw materials, such as botanical extracts for cosmetics. This process typically extracts more woody waxes and long-chain lipids, so the resulting the oud oil is often very viscous.

Hydro distillation: The oil obtained is usually thinner, but if the distillation time is extremely long (such as the "heavy oil" extracted in the later stage), the viscosity will also increase.

Production process

Hydro-distillation is the most traditional and widely used extraction method in the oud oil industry now. Through a long-duration, high-temperature simmering process, the oud oil that is exceptionally rich, deep, and long-lasting.

During the oud oil  production process, variables such as soaking duration, fermentation temperature, as well as distillation temperature and timing, all contribute to the final characteristics of the Oud oil. These factors influence not only the viscosity, but also the aromatic profile and coloration of the essence.
